My favorite Android Apps

I’m loving my HTC Desire and Android, and it’s many possibilities.

On pretty much every front, Android has a lead over the iPhone, because of it’s open platform and more features.

One place it still behind though, is the market and Apps for it. But within one year, it will have caught up, simply because of the huge user base Android is getting at the moment and the improvements in firmware 2.2. In firmware 2.2 (froyo) the market has improved, the API for devs has improved and you can install Apps to the SD card, yay!

But even right now, there are lots of great apps for Android phones, here are my favorites and most of them are even free.

  • Barcode Scanner (Free) - This great app uses your camera to scan barcodes. Now this might seem a bit unnecessary for most people, but you are going to love it, because it also handles QR codes. QR codes are a barcode, which contains data on both the horizontal and vertical axis and this data, can be pretty much everything. Evey thing from email, website links, addresses, raw text, links to apps on the market and much more. Watch this video for a more detailed explanation. Download Barcode Scanner from the Market or here and when you got it installed, you can test it out with this QR code.
  • Dropbox (Free) - If you don’t know Dropbox, well then sign up right away. You get 2,25 GB free online space, which can be synced between your computers and now also phones. You can share files, folders with both dropbox users and non-dropbox users. The Dropbox App for android is great and under constant development. You can download the app from the market (QR code).
  • AndChat (Free) - The best IRC client for Android out there. Has support for multi-server, SSL, BNC’s and much more. It’s easy to use and Free. Download from the market (QR code).
  • Fring (Free) - Fring is a great multi-IM client, with support for MSN, Gtalk, ICQ, Yahoo, AIM, SIP, Skype and Twitter. You can even do normal voice calls and video calls via Fring. Download from the market (QR code).
  • Google Goggles (Free) - This clever app from Google is a visual search app, meaning you can take a picture of an object and Goggles will recognize it (sometimes) and do a Google search for the object. It’s most for fun and showoff, but it’s free and can be easily downloaded from the market (QR code).
  • Handcent SMS (Free) - The built-in SMS app in Android is pretty good, but with Handcent, you are taking it one step further. With lots of options to customize it’s layout, support for SMS, MMS, animations, smilies, login lock and SMS popup, it’s highly recommended. Download from the market (QR code).
  • NewsRoom (5$) - Even though NewsRoom isn’t free, it’s without doubt the best RSS reader for Android. With fluent controls, an excellent interface and high speeds, plus support for buying a key directly from the dev, it’s worth the 5 dollars. Download the trial from the market (QR code).
  • Seesmic Twitter (Free) - There are a billion Twitter apps for Android and Seesmic seems to be one of the best, plus is free. It has pretty much all the expected features, like integration with the camera and url-shortening services, and it’s fast, plus easy to use. Download from the market (QR code).
  • Mobisle Notes (Free) - This is a simple and easy to use note app. You can create notes and to do lists and easily share them with your self or others via the built-in share menu. Download from the market (QR code).
  • Qik (Free) -With Qik you can record video and easily share them with Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and many more. You can even record and stream it LIVE to the net. Download from the market (QR code).
  • Wapedia (Free) - This is the fastest and easiest way to look up stuff from Wikipedia on your phone. Wapedia is fast, doesn’t use lot of data and has support for many languages. Download from the market (QR code)
  • EStrongs File Explorer (Free) - Great file explorer, does it all. Download from market (QR code).
  • Wifi Analyzer (Free) - This app is simply amazing! You can scan for WIFI networks, analyze which channels would be best for your network, watch information about nearby networks and much more. If you work with IT, this has to be installed on your phone. Download from market (QR code).
  • Spare Parts (Free) - Spare Parts opens up for some extra settings, where you can tweak your phone and gather information, eg. about battery and wifi usage. Off course only change settings, you actually know what is. Download from market (QR code)
  • Nummeruglen (Free) - Nummeruglen is a danish app, which looks up on the Internet to see who is calling. An english alternativ with support for also US, Sweden and Germany is Lookup Incoming Call (QR code). Download Nummeruglen from market (QR code).
  • KeePassDroid (Free) - If you use the brilliant KeePass program on your PC/Mac, KeePassDroid let’s you open Keepass databases on your phone. It works perfectly, has support for KeePass 1.x and copy user/pass to clipboard. Download from market (QR code).
  • DMI (Free) - A great app for danish weather forecasts. Has data from 500 different locations, uses GPS/network to pinpoint your location. An English alternative would be The Weather Channel (QR code). Download DMI from market (QR code).
